The Lady Nuggets brought home the Holiday Hoops hardware with a win over East Grand Forks Friday 47-26. Solid offense and defense once again helped the Nuggets sail ahead at half with a score of 31-9 with Sannes scoring 19 of the team’s 31. The second half gave the full bench an opportunity for varsity action. Nice tournament girls! The two wins move the Nuggets record to 4-3 for the season. Their next game is Jan. 3 vs. Ulen Hitterdahl at 6 PM in Hawley – the first game of the girls/boys double-header. Sartell easily handled Detroit Lakes earlier in the day for a 3rd place showing.

The Lady Nuggets are taking part in a Holiday tourney during Christmas break Dec.27 & 28 in Sartell, MN. Thursday’s games included a win by East Grand Forks over Detroit Lakes and a match up between Hawley and Sartell.

The Lady Nuggets had a strong first half with good ball movement around the hoop and hot shooting. Nuggets led 36-9 at the half with Noreen and Sannes combining for 26.

The second half continued much like the first with smothering defense by the Nuggets, quick passes, strong attacks to the hoop and the Sabres just didn’t have an answer for any of it. Nuggets win 56-24 and will face East Grand Forks Friday at 4:30 pm.

Boys Basketball wins.
Nuggets 75, Wadena-Deer Creek 40.

The Hawley Nugget boys basketball team entered their home court Thursday night with a distinct height advantage over opponent Wadena-Deer Creek. But the Wolverines had an arsenal of their own in the hot-handed Van Erp brothers. The Nuggets quickly went up 4-0, but stayed there for over two minutes due to several turnovers and a series of scoreless trips down the court. The Wolverines kept it close, tying the game 8-8 at one point until a crowd-pleasing dunk by Pekas at the 12 minute mark started a Nugget run. When the dust settled, it was the Wolverines who had been held scoreless for nearly 7 minutes and who found themselves on the wrong end of a 38-11 game. With four minutes to play, solid shooting by the Van Erps added 12 points to the home team’s four, and the Nuggets hit the locker room with a 42-23 advantage.

The second half proved to be all Nuggets as the boys poured it on with a more than 2:1 scoring advantage that led to a 70-37 game with 6:30 remaining and the starting five taking a seat. But the Nugget bench is deep and the boys held the Wolverines to just three and finished the game 75-40. The Hawley Nuggets head into the Christmas break with a 6-0 record. Nice job boys!

Thanks to the UCB Mystix dance team for treating the crowd to a fabulous jazz routine during half time.

Boys Basketball wins. Nuggets 81, Barnesville Trojans 73.

Boys Basketball wins.
Nuggets 81, Barnesville Trojans 73.

When HOL rival Barnesville comes to town, you know it’s going to be a battle royale on the field or on the court and Tuesday night was just that with a near full capacity crowd to witness. The Nuggets secured a quick two to start the game and led for most of the half, but Barnesville had shooters connecting all around the hoop, closing in to tie 19-19 at 10:32. The Nuggets pulled away with some nice team play on both ends of the court, leading by as much as 9. But the Nuggets’ 11-5 foul disadvantage sent the Trojans to the line, closing the gap to 41:34 before a buzzer-beating 3 from down town sent the boys to the locker room with a 44:36 advantage.

Barnesville’s Matt Holland must have had a fire lit at half as he came out and scored eight unanswered points before Hawley could recover and rally for a few of their own and increase their lead to 11 with a 3 by Leaf at the 12 minute mark. Despite a few players in foul trouble, Hawley continued their intense trap defense spurred on by an enthusiastic student section. But Barnesville found openings and narrowed the lead to six with seven minutes to play. At times it looked as though a football rematch was taking place with bodies colliding and chasing loose balls. The Nuggets increased their advantage to 13 at the 3:30 mark with a nice three by Regnier. Barnesville’s Strand then got the hot hand and brought Barnesville back within 9 with 2:30 remaining. Barnesville tried to send Hawley to the line with suffocating defense as Hawley appeared to pull into a stall. Two at the line by Pekas put the boys put up by 12 once more with 1:00 left to play. A near half-court three by Strand brought Barnesville within 9 with 19 seconds remaining. Nuggets sealed the win despite shooting poorly at the line and a last 2 point bucket by Strand. Nuggets win 81-73.

Girls Basketball wins. Nuggets 36, Ada-Borup Cougars 29.

Girls Basketball wins.
Nuggets 36, Ada-Borup Cougars 29.

The Ada-Borup Cougars came to town to take on the Lady Nuggets for a rare Monday night non-conference match up. The Cougars were quick to score and the Nuggets answered right back. But the Lady Cougars poured in 8 unanswered points to bring the score to 2-10 with 12:26 remaining in the half. The intense play continued for the next 8+ minutes with the Nuggets rallying for a series of their own and bringing the half to a close with a score of 13-17 and with neither team in foul trouble despite the strong defensive play.

The Lady Nuggets came out strong to start the second half. Some nice outside shots and penetration drawing fouls for four points from the charity stripe gave Hawley its first lead of the night 22-19. But Ada would not go quietly this Monday night, fighting back to regain the lead 29-28 with 4:10 remaining. Two shots from the line returned the lead to Hawley 30-29 at 1:46. With under a minute remaining and the ball in their control, Ada-Borup took a timeout and hit the floor with a plan to get the ball into the hands of Sr. Megan Kolness who was fouled on her shot but missed both at the line. The Cougars had no choice but to foul, sending Noreen to the line for 2, and increasing the Nugget advantage to three with 30 seconds left on the clock. Another miss by the Cougars ended with the ball in Sannes’ hands and an immediate foul sending her to the line twice more where she was 4 for 4, sealing the Nuggets second win of the season 36:29. Congratulations Nuggets!

Thanks to the Hawley student section for adding some noise to the night and spurring the girls on for the win.

Girls Basketball loses.
Nuggets 33, Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines 34.

The Lady Nuggets traveled to Wadena to meet the Lady Wolverines Friday night. With the Hawley boys in DGF and WDC’s men also on the road, it was a small but spirited crowd in attendance in the spacious new WDC gymnasium. A quick bucket by the Wolverines threatened to set the pace for the first half, but the Nuggets found their groove playing tough defense against WDC’s 6’3″ Emily Miron, holding her to 5 points and keeping her off the boards in the first half. The Nuggets’ 4-out, patient offense gave them a 21-12 advantage going into the second half.

The Wolverines scored five unanswered points to start the half and pulled within one with 13 minutes remaining for a score of 23-22. Turnovers on both ends of the court kept the score close for the remainder of the night. A critical Nugget turnover with 1:50 remaining gave the Wolverines their second lead of the night. With :4 remaining and a one point lead, WDC missed the front end of a 1:1 , giving the Nuggets the ball. A half court shot at the buzzer would not fall and the Nuggets came up short in a tough 33-34 loss.
