Memorial Auditorium was electric last night with several fans from both Hawley and Perham. There was defense and more defense from both sides in the first half when the halftime score was only 19-22 with Hawley down. After the half, scoring was nearly even until slowly Perham began converting more regularly. After time, Hawley was forced to foul Perham to stop the clock which put Perham in the bonus situation. Successful free throws spread the lead until there was no catching up. It was a tough sub-section loss following a fantastic season of great playing.

And so March Madness begins with opening round action of the Section 8AA playoffs! The #1-seeded Hawley Nuggets kicked off post-season play facing the #8-ranked Wadena-Deer Creek (WDC) Wolverines Thursday in Hawley. The winner of the game would go on to face the winner of the Barnesville-Breckenridge matchup.

The night would belong to the Maroon and Gold as the Wolverines were able to connect just five times in the first half – four from the field and once from the line, while nearly every Nugget connected from nearly every location taking a 57-9 half-time lead.

The second half proved much the same with the Wolverines adding 14 to their total and the Nuggets’ full team getting some good minutes, ending the game 86-23.

This would be the last game on the Hawley home court for the Nugget seniors – Devon, Jacob, Brandon Logan, and Zach. We wish them and all the team and coaches good luck in the rest of post-season play. Let’s show the Nuggets our support and turn out in full force this Saturday at 6 pm at Concordia College.

The Hawley Nuggets traveled to Park Rapids Friday night to close out their season with the 8-16 Panthers.

The Nuggets got the tip and the first three points, but the lead changed hands several times with the Panthers getting several easy baskets despite, or maybe because of, the Nugget press.

At 12:31, the Nuggets took the lead 13-12 off a bucket by Jacob Crompton and would start to put a little distance between themselves and the Panthers for the rest of the half despite continued hustle from the opposition who seemed relatively unaffected by the Hawley defense. Plagued by turnovers, Hawley led by just 11 at the half which included two mega-dunks by Pekas.

The next 18 minutes proved much the same although the Nuggets continued to increase the spread, going up by 24 momentarily at the 11:40 mark and eventually to stay with eight minutes remaining. Nuggets win, 80-52.

Nuggets end their regular season with a 23-1 record. Nice season guys. Good luck in your post-season play!
